If you are purchasing a new puppy one of the first things you should do is ensure your breeder performs all the recommended health testing for your breed. Check out the list below from the AKC’s list of health tests recommended for each breed, and make sure you check with the breeder to ensure they have complied with the recommended testing requirements. If you are choosing to purchase a crossbred puppy, you will need to make sure both parents have all the tests for each breed, as your puppy could inherit health issues from every breed they are made up of.
Contrary to popular opinion, hybrid vigor in crossbreds or ‘designer dogs’ is a myth, and you are far more likely to end up with a healthy puppy through purchasing a purebred puppy from an ethical breeder who does all the recommended health testing. Unfortunately, there is no governing body for “designer dogs” and therefore very few breeders of “oodles” and similar trendy breeds do the required health testing recommended below.
